A native of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Desai Williams’ first passion was soccer, but he switched to track and field athletics when his high school dropped its soccer program. He first made his mark on the national scene in 1977 when, in the month of August, he won eight gold medals in track events between the Canada Games and the Junior National Championships.
Two years later, now a Canadian senior champion in the 100 m and a student Clemson University, he represented his nation at the 1979 Pan American Games, finishing sixth in the 200 m and eighth in the 100 m.

He was the 100 and 200 metre Canadian champion in 1980 and was selected to compete at that year’s Summer Olympics, but stayed home after Canada joined the boycott of those Games. After setting a national record in the 200 m in 1981, he travelled to the 1982 Commonwealth Games, where he won silver in the 4x100 metre relay alongside Ben Johnson, Mark McKoy, and Tony Sharpe.
